The Top 10 Most Livable Cities in the World (2021)

Australia dominated The Global Livability Index 2021 as its four cities secured places in the top 10 list of the most livable cities in the world. Adelaide sits on the 3rd spot, Perth lands in 6th, Brisbane in 10th, and Melbourne at 8th as it lost its long record to Auckland as the number one city in the list. Index rankings are based on several quantitative and qualitative factors such as stability, culture and environment, infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

According to EIU, new indicators were added due to pandemic including healthcare stress and nation-wide restrictions on physical stores, concerts, theatres, sporting events, restaurants, church gatherings, and schools. The Global Chief Economist of EIU, Simon Baptist highlighted that this year’s rankings have been fairly aligned to COVID-19 impact.


Baptist also mentioned that the cities declared lockdown because of the coronavirus surge, affected their scores in several standards. Such factor made most of the European cities to fell down in the rankings. Nevertheless, major cities in Australia, Japan, and New Zealand somehow remained stable with good access to different services even with restrictions, and their healthcare systems were buoyant due to low number of cases compared to the other cities in the rest of the world.


In fact, Adelaide was able to obtain perfect scores when it comes to the healthcare and education categories. Surprisingly, local institutions were able to deliver physical and remote learning efficiently. Such aspect speaks volume especially for international students eyeing to study in Australia.


When the vaccine rollouts are finally finished, and once the borders are finally open, EIU expects Adelaide to become the next hot travel destination.
